Epson EcoTank says an ink pad needs service (E-11, W-11): what it means and what to do

Updated 2026-10-13·6 min read
Short answer

On EcoTank printers such as the ET-2800, W-11 means an ink pad is nearing the end of its service life (press start to keep printing) and E-11 means it needs replacing, so printing stops. The printer has counted the ink sent to its pads. If the printer is under warranty, contact Epson first. Otherwise a technician or a counter reset gets it printing again, and you should check the pads.

What the codes mean

Epson EcoTank printers with a small screen show a code and a message. These are the ink pad codes from Epson’s own support pages for the ET-2800 series:

Code What the printer says Can you still print?
W-11 “An ink pad is nearing the end of its service life. Contact Epson for support.” Yes. Press the start button to carry on
W-14 “A borderless printing ink pad is nearing the end of its service life.” Yes. Press start to carry on
E-11 “An ink pad needs to be replaced. Contact Epson for support.” No. Scanning still works
E-12 “A borderless printing ink pad needs to be replaced.” Only with borders. Borderless printing is blocked

The same message on your EcoTank model

Not every EcoTank uses the same codes. Models with a screen show a code; models without one flash lights instead. This is what Epson’s own support page for each model says (US models first, then Europe):

Model Screen or lights? Ink pad nearly full / full Borderless pad Epson source
ET-2800 (ET-2803) Screen W-11 / E-11 W-14 / E-12 ET-2800 error codes
ET-4800 Screen W-11 / E-11 W-14 / E-12 ET-4800 LCD messages
ET-2720 Screen W-11 / E-11 W-14 / E-12 ET-2720 status messages
ET-2850 Screen W-11 / E-11 not listed by Epson ET-2850 error codes
ET-2760 Screen W-11 / E-11 not listed by Epson ET-2760 LCD error codes
ET-2750 Screen W-11 / E-11 not listed by Epson ET-2750 LCD error codes

ET-2810 (Europe) Lights Ink and paper lights flash at the same time Ink and paper lights flash one after the other ET-2810 Series User’s Guide

On the light-only models, Epson adds that if a message to continue appears on your computer, you can press a copy button to keep printing for now. Two light patterns are easy to mix up with the ink pad warning: all lights flashing is a paper jam or printer error, and ink and paper lights on without flashing means the printer was not switched off properly. Neither is an ink pad problem, and a reset will not fix them.

On the computer, Epson’s printer software may show it as “Service Required” or “the printer’s ink pads are at the end of their service life”. It is the same thing. What each version of the message means.

What is really going on

The printer does not measure how wet its ink pads are. It counts the ink it sends to them during cleaning and borderless printing, and warns (W-11, W-14) and then stops (E-11, E-12) when the count reaches a limit. So the printer is not broken. A number in its memory has reached its limit.

The pads do hold real ink, though. That is why Epson stops the printer: carrying on without doing anything could, one day, make ink leak.

First: is it under warranty?

Epson says that if this happens during the standard warranty, replacing the ink pads is covered. If your EcoTank is still under warranty, contact Epson before doing anything else. Epson US lists 562-276-1300 (U.S.) and 905-709-9475 (Canada) for its ink pad replacement service, with shipping both ways.

Epson’s US support page for this message is still titled “One-Time Maintenance Ink Pad Reset Utility”, but when we checked it on 29 September 2026 it only listed service options, with no download.

Your options out of warranty

Option What happens Good to know
Epson service Epson replaces the ink pads Cost and waiting time depend on your country
A local repair shop The technician replaces or washes the pads and resets the counter Ask them to check the pads, not only the counter
Reset the counter yourself VNIT Reset Tool reads the counter free, runs one free trial to 80%, and resets to 0% with a US$6 key Then check the pads yourself (see below)

Reset an EcoTank yourself

  1. Download VNIT Reset Tool for Windows or Mac.
  2. Connect the printer with a USB cable. The ET-2800 answers over Wi-Fi but does not let its counter be read or reset that way, so use the cable.
  3. Press Read counter. You see each counter as a percentage: the Main pad, the Platen pad (borderless printing) and, on models such as the ET-2800, an Ink system pad.
  4. Run the free trial, or enter your key and reset to 0%.
  5. Switch the printer off with its power button, wait about 10 seconds and switch it on again. The code clears.

Models covered this way include every EcoTank in the table above and their regional versions. Look yours up in the supported printers list.

Some EcoTank models use a replaceable maintenance box instead (for example the ET-3760, ET-4760 and ET-8550). Their message asks you to replace the maintenance box, and reset software cannot help. Box or pads? How to tell.

After the reset: the pads

A reset clears the count, not the ink. If the printer has printed a lot or run many cleaning cycles, the pads may be close to full. Wash or replace them, or fit an external waste ink tank. How to handle the pads after a reset.
